Study visit to Iceland in the scope of the “Energy and Climate Change” Programme

The study visit of the Programme Operator of the “Energy and Climate Change” Programme to the Republic of Iceland took place from 29th May to 1st June  2023.

The concept of the study trip to the Republic of Iceland referred to operational level activities which was attended by representatives of the Programme Operator, Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds – Directorate for European Territorial Cooperation and the Programme Partner, Energy Institute Hrvoje Požar.

The aim of the visit was to exchange experiences and present the best practice examples related to the focus of the “Energy and Climate Change” Programme – the use of geothermal energy. For this matter, ways of using geothermal energy as a renewable energy source in Iceland were presented, with reference to plans for the future. Also, during the visit, contacts were made with relevant stakeholders for the purpose of bilateral cooperation in the field of geothermal energy utilization in the Republic of Croatia.

In this respect, on-the-spot visits were made to National Energy Authority of Republic of Iceland – Orkustofnun, the Green by Icealnd platform for cooperation on climate issues and green solutions, Geothermal Energy Research Cluster – GEORG, one of the largest facility to produce geothermal energy in the world -Hellisheiđavrkjun Geothermal Park. Also, on-the-spot visits were made to Friðheimar and Laugarvatn Fountain as the best practice examples of using geothermal energy for entrepreneurial purposes.

The study trip was organized by the Programme Operator and Programme Partner in cooperation with Orkustofnun, the National Energy Authority of the Republic of Iceland.
